From the Mediterranean to Moldova (1st concert) Two outstanding duets play Klezmer & Greco-Turkish music

Kleine Synagoge

Innovative kanun player Sofia Labropoulou and versatile guitarist Vassilis Ketentzoglou have created their own repertoire for this unique combination, merging the guitar’s even-tempered, “Western” sound with the “Eastern”, microtonal music of the kanun. In their duo program, “Butterfly,” the borders between these two worlds fade, and tonalities and cultures from across the Ottoman Empire and Southeastern Europe meet in an entirely new musical sound-world. The concert continues with a rare musical encounter between Yiddish Summer Weimar's Artistic Director, Alan Bern, and Ziliyn Biret, a clarinetist renowned for his deeply felt, spiritual interpretations of early twentieth century klezmer repertoire. Drawing the wide-ranging program together, the two duos join together in an impromptu quartet.
