Ilya Gindin (DE/RU; clarinet, saxophone)
is a professional musician who has been playing the clarinet with passion all his life. Whether performing classical music, klezmer, jazz, or improvisation, he continually pushes the boundaries of this remarkably versatile instrument. In addition to the clarinet, he also plays the alto saxophone.
For the past 26 years, Ilya has dedicated himself to performing and teaching klezmer music. He has participated in numerous international Jewish music festivals, including KlezFest London, KlezKanada, Ashkenaz Festival in Toronto, and Yiddish Summer Weimar, and has performed on stages around the world.
Ilya is best known as a member and featured soloist of the internationally acclaimed band Dobranotch, with whom he recorded seven CDs and one LP.
Alongside a wide range of commissions, collaborations, bands, and guest appearances, he performed as a soloist in the 2022 project Yellow Stars with the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, giving the Russian premiere of Vlad Margulis's Klezmer Clarinet Concerto. Later that year, he left Russia, settled in Berlin, and has since collaborated with a variety of international swing and klezmer projects across Europe. In 2024, he served as the musical director of the international project Find Common Language, supported by the German Federal Foreign Office.
For several years, he has also performed with guitarist Dmitry Illarionov, presenting a diverse classical program arranged for guitar and clarinet. A CD recording of this program is scheduled for release in 2026.
