
Sarah Myerson (USA; voice, dance)
is an ordained cantor actively working to connect egalitarian Jewish religious with secular/cultural Yiddish communities. She serves as the Spiritual Leader of the Roosevelt Island Jewish Congregation in New York City and is proficient in Yiddish, which she studied in New York (Jewish Theological Seminary, YIVO-Bard, Worker’s Circle) and Israel (Naomi Prower Kadar, Beit Ben Yehuda).
A master of traditional Yiddish singing, Sarah teaches workshops on Yiddish song and Yiddish dance worldwide. She studied conducting and pedagogy at university level and has conducted and directed synagogue and community choirs since 2003.
Sarah loves singing in choirs herself and is honored to have worked under world-class conductors including Zubin Mehta, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Kent Nagano.
She leads Yiddish dance at weddings and other events. A multi-instrumentalist, she also writes and performs original compositions, including with Jewish spiritual music duo Shekedina.
Sarah holds a Master of Sacred Music and Diploma of Hazzan from Jewish Theological Seminary of America and a Bachelor of Music (Composition Honors) from Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
She has been part of the YSW family since 2011 and is excited to be a faculty member again this year!
