with Vassilis Ketentzoglou, Tayfun Guttstadt & Alan Bern

Over the last three years, Yiddish Summer Weimar has explored the interconnections and shared roots of Jewish, Greek, and Turkish musical traditions under the guidance of master musicians from each of these rich cultures. In this workshop, YSW founder Alan Bern (piano/accordion), Vassilis Ketentzoglou (guitar) and Tayfun Guttstadt (ney/lavta) will revisit what we learned over the last few years and present the most important discoveries of this groundbreaking intercultural work.

The intermediate level will give an introduction to melodic modes in Yiddish, Greek, and Turkish music (shteyger, dromos, and maqam); shared repertoire across these traditions; musical genres; style; and ornamentation, at a comfortable pace. This level is aimed at technically proficient players who are newcomers to the topic, as well as those wishing to review or update their knowledge.

The advanced level will work on more difficult materials at a fast pace. This level is intended for players with at least some prior knowledge of the topic.

Both the intermediate and the advanced level will work both with written music and by ear.
Please refer to the self-tests for instrumental workshops if you are unsure about your level.

Take the test!
