25th Anniversary | Gala Concert @ Marktplatz
Finally, from 4 pm to 10 pm, the YSW 25th anniversary gala concert will take place on a large open-air stage directly in front of City Hall on Weimar’s historic Market Square. The concert will feature many of the audience favorites from over the years in a variety-filled program ranging from traditional klezmer to contemporary, progressive Yiddish rock. Some seating is available and there will also be plenty of room for dancing. To book a seat, please follow the event link below.
Well, In just 25 years, Yiddish music and culture have become part of the fabric of life in Thuringia – impossible to imagine warm summer nights in Weimar without the sounds of live Yiddish music wafting through the streets. Visitors from all over the world come to Weimar each year to experience and contribute to this unique atmosphere, and they return home with unforgettable memories of joyful, meaningful and eye-opening discoveries and encounters. With its four-fold mission to research, teach, create and present traditional and new Yiddish and related cultures, Yiddish Summer Weimar has firmly established Weimar as one of the most important centers of living Jewish culture in the world today.
At a moment in history when Jewish and other minority cultures in Europe face the mounting threat of exclusion and violence, the city of Weimar’s invitation to celebrate our 25th anniversary in front of City Hall is not only a re-commitment to Yiddish Summer Weimar, but also an important reaffirmation of democratic values. Prominent guests from politics and culture will be on hand to publicly proclaim their solidarity, and we hope you will bring friends and colleagues who share the vision of an open, pluralistic society. As we bring the curtain down this year on the first 25 years of Yiddish Summer Weimar, we will raise it again next year to launch the next era of learning, creativity and embracing diversity as an opportunity that enriches us all.
