This workshop will explore musical themes of peace from Israel and the wider Middle East. Yair Dalal’s Iraqi roots are deeply embedded in his musical work, and he weaves together Jewish and Arabic musical threads along with influences that range from the Balkans to India.

Beginning with an exploration of the maqam system, we will also explore Jewish piyyutim (sacred songs). Participants will have the chance to compose their own pieces along the musical and thematic themes of the workshop and to perform some of them in the final workshop concert.

In this workshop, we’ll work mostly by ear, with sheet music for some tunes.
