New Yiddish Music
The Lerner Moguilevsky Duo
July 24 - 31, 2025; unstructured (free) day: July 28
10 a.m. - 1 p.m. | intermediate
3 - 6 p.m. | advanced
with César Lerner & Marcelo Moguilevsky
This workshop is an opportunity to rediscover klezmer through experimentation and artistic freedom. We’ll focus on creativity, spontaneity and improvisation within the musical language. Participants will break with traditional structures, embracing subjectivity and self-listening as part of artistic exploration in a warm and trusting environment.
We’ll begin with an introduction to the philosophy of the Lerner Moguilevsky Duo and musical sources. After selecting and learning a piece of music, we’ll explore its evolution through perceptive exercises in solo, duo and group contexts, using movement, singing and body percussion as a prologue to the improvisation. You’ll build your own version of the tune through what we call the game of questions: "What if I change rhythm? Tempo? Harmony? Context?”
We’ll then learn a sign conducting system to lead group improvisation and present the participants’ work in the final concert.
This workshop is open to all instruments, including ones that are not conventional for klezmer. We’ll work both with sheet music and by ear. The workshop will be taught in English.
The intermediate level is for intermediate-to-advanced musicians who are rather new to improvisation.
The advanced level is for advanced musicians who have extensive experience with improvisation.
