Introduction to Yiddish Song

July 11 - 18, 2026; unstructured (free) day: July 15
10 a.m. - 1 p.m. & 3 - 6 p.m. | introductory

with Daniel Kahn, Eleanor Reissa & Rosamond van Wingerden (artist-in-residence)

What would it take for you to begin to sing Yiddish songs and find the songs that suit you? How can you tell a story with a song? These are just some of the questions that this workshop will explore. Two very different but equally devoted Yiddishists and performers, Eleanor Reissa and Daniel Kahn, have vast knowledge and experience in the world of Yiddish and singing.

Join us for a deep, fun, and meaningful workshop where we focus on powerful women in Yiddish culture!
We will learn about Yiddish songs and some of the women who have crafted and sung them, from flame-keepers of Eastern European folk ballads to legendary artists of the Yiddish stage to contemporary rock princesses and avant-garde poets.

Prior knowledge of Yiddish is not required. In fact, songs are a great way to learn a new language. Also, experience as a singer is not necessary. Singing is storytelling and performance can be as simple as telling a story. The main language of instruction will be English, but German and Yiddish translations will be available according to need.
All genders are welcome and encouraged to attend. The world of women in Yiddish includes everyone.
