Dray Doyres Three generations of klezmorim
Sat, Jul 19 ‘25 08:00 PM
Kleine Synagoge

From the 18th century through the mid-20th century, master Yiddish instrumental musicians (klezmorim) passed on their artistry through practical apprenticeships. This process guaranteed that the art of phrasing, timing, and expression would pass from generation to generation.

The meeting of Bern, Kovnatskiy and Maruthiah represents three generations of klezmer tradition. Bern, who helped launch the revival of klezmer music more than 40 years ago, has now grown into the role of “elder statesman.” Kovnatskiy, a student of Bern since the early 2000s, is now a mid-career master in his own right. And Maruthiah represents an up-and-coming generation that holds so much promise for the future.

This concert features a select repertoire of klezmer masterpieces performed with deep feeling, vitality and subtle musical communication worthy of the generations.
