A double bill concert featuring artists renowned for their reinvention of the socially critical Yiddish Song. Detroit-born troubadour, Daniel Kahn, is a mesmerizing performer whose program of new and old Yiddish songs includes fragile ballades, prison laments, revolutionary hymns and apocalyptic blues. His Yiddish translations of Woody Guthrie, Leonard Cohen, Bertolt Brecht and other socially critical songwriters have earned him hundreds of thousands of followers on YouTube. Sharing the evening with Kahn is the duo Soveles, two young singers who have dedicated themselves  to the intimate genre of the unaccompanied Yiddish Song. Drawing inspiration from old archival recordings,  Esther Wratschko and Isabel Frey compose and arrange new Yiddish songs that focus on feminism, social critique, women’s rights, human rights, and more. Their “thoughtful, purist and razor-sharp” (Mirjam Jessa, Ö1) a cappella arrangements have injected new life into contemporary Yiddish song and won them a loyal following.
