Mentions of Jews living in Weimar date to the 14th century, but the known records for the following centuries are rather sparse. However, one of the first Jewish people in Weimar left traces that can still be seen in the archive today: Moses Staffelsteiner, who came to Weimar with his family in 1529, could produce a ducal letter of protection limited to three years. He worked in Weimar as a merchant and physician and fought the plague here. After the expulsion of all Jewish people from the Saxon duchy, his whereabouts are unclear.
The first centuries of Jewish settlement in Thuringia were characterized by recruitment and expulsion, protection and pogroms. We will trace these origins at the City Castle.
