Eidel Malowicki (AT; Yiddish language)

is a native Yiddish speaker, having grown up in the Hasidic community.

At age 12, she won a prize in the multilingual speech contest Sag’s Multi, becoming the first participant to deliver a speech in both German and Yiddish. This experience deepened her passion for the Yiddish language.

Academically, Eidel has explored Hasidism in Vienna through an ethnographic lens. As a board member of the Austrian Jewish Student Union, she launched her own Yiddish course and began teaching the language. She also served as editor of the Union’s magazine, NOODNIK, and has written about Yiddish for the magazine. In 2024, Eidel taught a course on Hasidic Yiddish language and culture at the University of Vienna’s summer language school. In 2023, she co-founded a regular Shmizkrays (Yiddish conversation group) with Phillip Schwarz through Yung Yidish Wien.

In her free time, Eidel enjoys learning and singing Yiddish songs, storytelling, and accompanying her brother, a cantor, on piano.
