Zilyin Biret (Réunion; clarinet, flute, voice, composer)
is a performer, teacher, and composer from Réunion Island who has been central to the revitalization of traditional Eastern European klezmer clarinet style for nearly two decades.
He is a leading specialist in the art of accompanying Yiddish dance and has worked closely with dance masters Avia Moore, Steven Weintraub, and Walter Zev Feldman at festivals and conferences including Klezkanada, Ashkenaz festival, Boston Jewish Music festival, Montréal Jewish festival, Yiddish New York, and Yiddish Summer Weimar.
Zilyin is also one of the most sought-after teachers of klezmer style and is especially regarded for his ability to inspire and mentor musicians of all instruments, ages, and abilities.
As a trio with Deborah Strauss and Jeff Warschauer, Zilyin has performed and led workshops in North America, Germany and Poland, and as a klezmer researcher and archivist he has collaborated with such luminaries as Joel Rubin, Kurt Bjorling, Jeffrey Wollock, Jérôme Block, and Pete Rushevsky.
He also teaches and performs Afro-Colombian music (gaita), Mandinka music (flute) and Maloya music (vocal and percussions).
