July 13 - 20, 2025; unstructured (free) day: July 17
10 a.m. - 1 p.m. | intermediate & advanced
with Dr Diana Matut, Avery Gosfield & Erik Warkenthin
In this workshop, a team of stellar teachers will introduce you to the world of Old or Early Yiddish songs. We will cover over 700 years of singing in Yiddish, beginning with Yiddish sung epic poetry from the Medieval period and going all the way up to Yiddish song cultures of the 1700s.
Geographically, this workshop will take us from Northern Africa to Italy as well as Western and Eastern Ashkenaz. The material taught will include songs for bridegrooms and brides, for Jewish holidays, for events in the history of Jewish communities of Europe, and more.
Each session will include an introduction to the song of the day. Instrumentalists have the chance to learn how to accompany and arrange this material, which, in terms of its musical language, is music of the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods.
If you’re not sure whether this class is right for you, please send an email to from where it will be forwarded to Dr Diana Matut!
